Dajue Temple

The Dajue Temple (Temple of Enlightenment), located at Beianhe Township, Haidian District and in the Yangtai Mountain west of Beijing, was founded in the 4th year under the reign of Xian Yong of the Liao Dynasty (1068), and known as "a giant one among 300 temples in West Mountains". It is a national cultural heritage under special protection.

The Temple of Enlightenment was built at the foot of the mountain, facing the east. Main buildings are Bell & Drum Towers, Maitreya Hall, Mahavira Hall, Amitayus Hall, Altar of Great Mercy, Dagoba, etc. Eight views of the temple are two ancient Chinese junipers beside Main Gate, stone-carved aquatic animals and Siyi Hall in Pool of Merits and Virtues, ancient magnolia trees and Biyunqing Pool in North Magnolia Courtyard, millennium gingko trees in front of Amitayus Hall, two spring waters around the temple, steles of JBB^jj Liao Dynasty on the east of Dragon Pool, and Jialing Dagoba on the highest position of the temple. The Jialin Dagoba contains the Shariputra (remaining bones) of Jia Ling an abbot of the temple during Qing Dynasty. Its shape is like the White Dagoba in Beihai Park, around which are high-rising pines and cypresses. A stele in the temple records the founding of the temple.
