Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province 180 kilometres southwest of Shanghai, is the centre of politics, economy, culture, and communications of the province. It's located at the south end of Jinghang Grand Canal, along the lower reaches of the Qiantangjiang River. With an area of 16596 429 sq. km., Hangzhou has a population of 9,860,000.

With a history of 2, 200 years, Hangzhou is one of the seven ancient capitals in China (The other six are Beijing, Nanjing, Xi'an,Luoyang, Kaifeng and Anyang). First built as a county during the Qin Dynasty some 2,100 years ago, Hangzhou became prosperous after the building of the Grand Canal in the Sui Dynasty (581-618). The city was the capital of Wuyue State (893-978) during the Five Dynasties Period and of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). It is one of the six famous ancient capitals of China.

Hangzhou's silk weaving, which dates back to the seventh century, is as beautiful as its brocades. It is well known for many handicrafts including sandalwood fans, silk parasols, scissors, and bamboo ware. It is the home of the high quality green Longjing tea called Dragon Well tea. Mandarin oranges, bamboo, timber, and sugar cane are among its other agricultural industries.

Hangzhou is not only a famous cultural and historic city, but also al an international tourist destination famed for its scenery. It is reputed as "if there is a paradise in the sky, Suzhou and Hangzhou are those on earth" because of its exquisite mountains and waters. Particularly, the beautiful West Lake is most renowned both domestically and internationally.
