At the southern foot of Yongning Mountain in Yixian County, 120 kilometres southwest of Beijing, lies the last group of imperial tombs of the Qing dynasty. The construction of the tombs took 185 years, from 1730 to 1915. The whole zone of the tombs called Xiling, is 100 kilometres in circumference, covering an area of some 800 square kilometres. It extends from Liangge Village in the east to Zijing Pass in the west and is bordered by Dayan Bridge on the south and by Qifeng Mountain on the north.
Lying here are four imperial tombs: Tai Ling (the tomb of Emperor Yongzheng), Chang ling (that of Emperor Jiaqing), Mu Ling (Emperor Daoguang) and Chong Ling (Emperor Guangxu) as well as ten tombs of imperial wives, princes and princesses. About 76 lie buried here including 4 emperors, 9 empresses and 63 other members of the royal family.
