Towering at No. 88 Shiji Avenue to the east of the Huangpu River, Jinmao Tower is located in Pudong New Area, Gold section of Lujiazui financial and business district. It's on a line with the Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower in distance, facing the famous Bund over the Huangpu River.

With a total height of 420.5 metres and the 88 floors main building, the Jinmao Tower was known as "No. 1 High-rise in China" and the 3rd in the world in the past, next only to the Petronas Twin Towers with an elevation of 450 meters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the Sears Towers of 443.5 meters in Chicago, USA. Covering a floor space of 290,000 square meters it goes far beyond the total floor space of all buildings putting together along the Bund opposite the river. Designed by the famous SOM of the USA and with a total investment of RMB 46 million yuan by the 14 such units as China Oil and Cereal and Chemical Industries subordinated to the Ministry for Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries the cost for the tower building is 1.5 times that of the Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower, the Yangpu and Nanpu bridges putting together. With its foundation laid in October 1994 it was brought to completion and put into use on the 28th of August 1999. Now it is under the management of China Jinmao Group Co. Ltd.

Special Design

The architectural style of the Jinmao Tower is a successful example of a combination of a pagoda-like establishment in the orient with the world hi-tech and art for building-construction. The facade features a tall and exquisite ancient pagoda of compact eaves of China, which may be traced back to the pagoda of Jianfu Temple in Xi'an, i.e. the Small Wild Goose Pagoda as popularly known to many people. The building is in silver-white as a whole, straight and magnificent if you take a look at it. It is a symbol of the speedy rising economy in Shanghai and a landmark building in the city too. The bird's-eye-view hall as set up on the 88lh floor has been appraised by the CNTA (National Tourism Administration of China) as a 4A-level spot for sightseers.

What to see in Jinmao Tower

With a multi-functional combination of office, hotel, catering, sightseeing, exhibition, entertainment and shopping, the Jinmao Tower is a modernization skyscraper which has unique design and luxuriant upholstery. The sightseeing deck is on the 88th floor at the height of 340.1 metres and it is now the highest and biggest one in China. Here, there is the highest Air Post Office that supplies precious stamp products and special service. From 53F to 87F is the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Shanghai. Especially the 28 winding corridors in the middle hall at the height of 152m and diametre of 27m, illuminated by neon lights, are colourful and attractive, and therefore the unique hotel atrium is billed as a Tunnel of Time. The Jinmao Tower has got a first in Shanghai Classical Building in last 50 years in new China, the award of Art Invention Achievement in the 20th UIA Congress, and many other awards home and aboard.
