Situated at a place 90 kilometers south of Taiyuan, Pingyao is the best preserved ancient city in our country. It was built in the Xizhou Dynasty with over 2,000 years of history. There are many cultural relics and historical sites in Pingyao, such as the most intact ancient county city wall in China, which was made of bricks and stones and built in the early days of the Ming Dynasty; the main hall of Zhenguo Temple, an ancient wooden building that was built in the Five- Dynasty Period; and Dacheng Palace of Wen Temple, which was built in the Jin Dynasty. In addition to these cultural relics and historical sites, another obvious characteristic of Pingyao City is the courtyard with buildings on the four sides used as residence for the local people. There are 3,797 such traditional courtyards inside the city. In the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was called "Mini Beijing", because there were a lot of rich businessmen. For example, there were eight exchange shops headed by Rishengchang engaged in peak age covering 45 cites in China, and even San Francisco and New York in America, where one could see the branch shops of Rishengchang. All these disclosed the the great wealth it had at that time. The ancient city Pingyao was pro-claimed by the State Council as a national famous historical and cultural city in 1986.
